Close Reading of Film Stills in Temple Grandin

I will be analyzing the film stills provided in class for the film Temple Grandin. The first film still provided show Temple in her squeeze machine, which is used to treat autistics. In this still, Temple is looking at her roommate while pulling a rope. Temple looks shocked, that her roommate walked in while she is in the machine. From the roommates perspective, she is looking at Temple, because it is a strange and weird way to treat autistics. I could use this film still in my paper to show that this is one way that Temple used to clam down.

The third still that was provided for Temple Grandin, shows Temple facing the audience at the meeting. There is a lot of facial expressions in the audience. They were shocked and surprised that Temple was lecturing about autism, because she is an autistic woman herself. The audience is also very focused on Temple because they are interested to listen to what Temple has to say about autism. The presenter at the stage looks confused and annoyed because Temple interrupted him and basically took over the meeting. There is also a sense of hope in the facial expressions of the audience.

My Milestone #3 Research Game Plan

There are still sources that I need to find for Milestone #3. The type of sources that I need to find are a encyclopedia, a book. and an additional source. The encyclopedia can be found through the Gale Virtual Reference Library, the book can be found at the library, and the additional source can be found by the database or a search engine like Google. My topic for the research paper is Portraying Human Minds in Film. Some possible search terms that can be used are "autism and temple grandin" or just autism or temple grandin alone, just to get some general information on both.

Blog Assignment #1

The topic that I have chosen for my research paper is Portraying Human Minds in Film. The main source that will be used is the film Temple Grandin, in which I will argue the portrayal of autism in the film is accurate in the way that real autistics think.

One of the sources that will be used in my research paper is "Autism from the Inside" by Temple Grandin herself. I found this source through Academic Search Complete. This source provides information on how Grandin dealt with autism in school and how teachers would not let her explain why she is not able to differentiate certain items, even if they are or mean the same thing. it also discusses how she would have a certain image image in her mind of an item, but if it looks different than what she thinks it would take her a while to process that it is the same thing. The argument of this article is basically Grandin giving advice to teachers on what help students with autism in a learning environment, because some teachers just don't know how to deal with them. The perspective that this source adds to my paper is is how it is accurate with Grandins real life. Since she did write this article, it is a great way to back up how they portrayed her with autism in the film. In the article Grandin states, "The assignment was to mark all the pictures of things that began with B. I failed to mark a picture of a bike and a bird bath. The teacher did not give me time to explain that I did not know the difference between the little trike that I rode and a bike (Grandin 30)". This is basically describing how autism affected her mental health. Also, that is the way that real autistics think because, they may not associate the letter B with everything that starts with it. They may associate it with what makes sense to them. This source fits my paper in the sense that it is coming from Grandin herself, and explains the way that real autistics think.

Another source that will be used is "How Does Visual Thinking Work in the Mind of a Person with Autism? A Personal Account" by Temple Grandin. I found this source through the JSTOR database. This source provides information on Grandin's personal account with autism. Also, on how visual thinking works for her. The argument of this source is that Grandin's mind is like an internet search engine, in the sense that her mind sorts images in categories like computer files. The perspective that this source adds to my paper is Grandin's own story on dealing with autism. In the article Grandin states, "The memories that come up first tend to be either early childhood or something that happened within the last week (Grandin 1437)". This is describing what memories pops up in her mind, which is shocking that a person with this mental illness is able to recall memories from her childhood. It makes sense when she says that her mind is like a search engine, because it is like the memory is stored in her mind forever. I chose this source because it is Grandin's own writing, just like the previous source mentioned.

Welcome, I am Marielis Morel. My current major as of now is Liberal Arts. I actually need a couple more classes to finish my degree requirements. As my educational plan goes, I don't plan on stopping with a Liberal Arts degree. I have decided to transfer to City Tech for the upcoming fall. I made this decision because I would like to pursue a degree in Paralegal Studies. My career goal is to work at a law firm or at a government agency. The types of movies that I like are comedies, or anything that has a lot of action. Usually I'm not picky on movies as long as it seems interesting. As for books, it's usually the same as well. It just has to be the type of book that I would want to keep on reading. I think that most people today are optimistic about technology, as well as myself. I consider myself as a technology optimist, because having some sort of technology comes in handy. It just gives you the ability to communicate faster, or surf the web or check your e-mail because you have instant access.
